Thanks to everybody who posted their advice on this. I was feeling quite
inclined towards the Specialized Rockhopper (you know how that upper price
limit creeps up and up the more nice shiny bikes you see... :)

However the LBS deals Trek but not Specialized, so I went in there
thinking I'll try the Trek 4500 here and probably go on somewhere else to
look at the Rockhopper ... which turned out not to be necessary - the 4500
was nice but they also had a 6500 in a good size for me, which I liked
enough to buy. There's no womens specific version of that model, but still
a good fit, and they're fitting a shorter handlebar stem, better saddle
and SPD pedals. So I managed to hit my £500 price limit (well, plus
extras :) I'll be picking it up later today, yay, shiny new bike!

Great stuff. Enjoy!

Simon, who is planning to go out for a ride when he has finished dealing
with Pesky Customers.
