I went for a spin today and it went well enough, but I had some issues with sticking cables. I took my road bike which as been hanging in my shed in the salty air for a while.
For my springtime new bike project, I'd like to perhaps try some other cables to avoid this corrosion problem. The cables are Shimano and the housing is Shimano and some Jagwire. It seems like I replace cables all the time, and when I pull them out they are always rusty and corroded.
What to do?
The problem is usually the housings. They fill up with crud and cause the cables to stick. Replace the housings every couple of years and you should be OK.
Wipe the cables with oil to lubricate. It doesn't hurt to dump some oil or grease into the housings either. In a pinch you can flush the housings with WD40, then dump some oil in there.
I've had great luck with the Avid Rollamajig. I used to have to change that last loop of cable every couple of months, now I rarely have to touch it.

Transfil make a number of products that claim to be designed for reliable operation in grotty conditions. I have a set of their "Mudlovers" cables, but don't yet have enough muddy miles on them to know whether or not they do what they claim. They also make waterproofing kits, and PTFE-coated cables and housings.
