I think I remember a section in Bill Neal's "Biscuits, Spoonbread and Sweet Potato Pie" where in discussing cornbread he writes about a basic Appalachian variety and more luxurious (read wealthy or extravagant) versions that contained things like butter, eggs and sugar (maybe milk, too)).
