The more senior ones won't have taken one to pass their driving test and their 'advanced' training probably assumed they knew basics such as that. I can't wait until the council parking officers stick a ticket on one of these people for a parking offence!

Police vehicles along with fire engines, ambulances, loaded hearses and the like often have blanket exemptions from parking tickets but if its clear that the drivers/staff aren't on duty I cant see why they couldn't be ticketed. Of course there's nothing to stop them appealing on the grounds that they were on standby and needed immediate access to their vehicle for a rapid response if called on - well maybe not a hearse ;-). I suspect emergency vehicles would often be given the benefit of doubt it they put forward such a defence but the deterent of knowing they'd have to go through the formalities of appealing might make them think twice about their parking..
