Correct, they were single levers that clicked into place - a pal of mine
calls them thumbies.

That means indexed - friction means that there are no set positions for
the lever re the gears. This is separate from the type of shifter.

(I take it by 'friction indexed' your were differentiating them from
modern two lever/button type shifters)

Because they were called thumb shifters (for obvious reasons) Still a
lot to be said for them, I have a Deore one still doing service as the
front shifter on my utility bike.
