Just a quick follow-up to my post from earlier regarding a local charity
bike ride's requirement to wear a helmet throughout the ride as a pre-
requisite to being entered into the "free" prize draw (though not
compulsory for taking part in the ride itself).

I have now received a letter back from the cycle ride committee stating
that they introduced the "incentive" to encourage people to wear helmets
after an unhelmeted rider "suffered a serious head injury" 2 years ago
on the ride. The decision was based on "advice from neurosurgeons and
RoSPA (http://www.rospa.com/roadsafety/info/cycle_helmets.pdf)"

Alas I am about to go to Cornwall for a week and so can not immediately
reply, but a quick skim through the PDF reveals it uses the infamous
Thompson et al 85% reduction figure (amongst others). The other sources
quoted I shall have to research further before presenting the case to my
GP that he (and the committee) may have been misinformed but if anyone
has any suggestions pertaining to this document in particular, they will
be gratefully received. I will of course be referencing cyclehelmets.org

As before, I intend to post my next letter here for your perusal before
I send it, and shall begin on it once I'm back from my hols.
