The rider is more important than the unicycle (Ken accomplishes some
amazing things on his ungeared 36), but given riders of relatively
equal strength, the rider on the geared uni will win on downhill, flat,
or slightly uphill terrain.
On significant uphills, the ungeared unis have a few advantages;
slightly less weight, no slop in the gear train, and generally more
appropriate crank lengths for climbing. A 36er in 1:1 mode with 150mm
cranks is a slow climber.
