OK,

I am not only a novice but also not an enthusiast. I need a new bike to replace my old GT Autostream (yes, an automatic, it works pretty well but I miss gearing myself). I will be using this strictly for 5-10 mile medium exercise on street/bike trails. I am looking at hybrids because I don’t like a bent over position. My concern is that a hybrid will be able to handle bike trails.

I would like to stay under $400. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I hope I’m on the right track.

Hybrid should be able to better handle (rough) bike trails etc than road bikes.

Thanks for the replies.

I have had both Giant and Trek hybrids recommended. I read an article that said the Trek hybrids were designed the best. However, I was told by a local shop that Trek doesnt make thier bikes and that Giant not only makes thier own bikes but several others also.

While looking at thr Treks today (I was eyeing both the 7200 and the 7200FX which seem the same except that the FX seems more MB style with flatter bars and 650 tires instead of the 700's, oh an no front suspension). I was also looking at the Navigator 200 which seems to be exactly the same as the 7200 only with nobbier tires.

Any thoughts?

Maybe another brand?
