Rear Deore-LX derailleur shifter slipping

Hi group,

On my wife's bike (a Scott MTB) the Deore-LX shifter for the rear
derailleur slips when trying to shift to a larger cog.

i.e. when I press it, it pushes all the way in without doing
anything. Sometimes it works however and it usually works when I
apply upwards pressure to the lever at the same time as pushing.

The question is, is it worth taking the shifter to bits to try and fix
this or is this a lost cause and it simply needs replaced?

Many thanks for your time!

Sounds like the plastic innards are just getting worn..Individual
shgiftrs are easy to find and not expensive.

I have seen this happen before on a similar shifter (Deore). I don't
think the shift mechanism isn't meant to be serviceable, but it may be
possible to fix.

Open up the shift pod (probably requires removal of 2 or 3 screws).
When you push the thumb shifter, a small plastic (or metal) piece
should rotate slightly and engage some teeth on a central disc. The
disc rotates and pulls the cable tighter. In my case, the little
piece that engages the disc wasn't always rotating enough to catch a
tooth. The shifter was slightly gunked up.

To fix, I took the shifter outside and liberally sprayed some Kroil on
the internals (I'm sure WD-40 or similar would be fine), paying
particular attention to the problem area. Once everything was cleaned
up, I dropped some Tri-Flow in to keep things moving. I guess any
lightweight lubricant would have done the trick. I haven't had any
troubles since (about 1 year ago).

Give it a shot...and if it doesn't work just go get a replacement
shift pod. I think they're pretty cheap these days.

Nothing last forever and it maybe time for a replacement.

Thanks all for the responses. I got a new shifter and fitted it over
the weekend. First time doing that and replacing a rear derallieur
cable and it all worked nicely in the end!
