Rear derailler 10 and 9 speed compatibility

I am building a new bike with ten speed components. I happen to have a
functional Ultegra rear derailler just lying around. It is the older 6500
and used to sit on a nine speed cassette. It seems to me that if everything
else is ten speed. Shifters, chain, chainrings, FD that this should work as
well as a new 6600. Will anybody agree with me on this or is there something
I've overlooked?
Actually I have nine speed barend shifters ( DA ) lying around too that can
be used in a non indexed mode. Would they work as well on a ten speed setup.
This is a TT bike so the barend shifters would be appropriate.

It'll have a 9 on it and you'll get laughed off the track! Oh Noes!

Sure, if you wanna frictionshift the tens. You might find yourself wanting
indexing back, though, especially at first. But it's worth a shot.

I've taken this into consideration and am thinking about different ways of
camouflaging it. One tactic would be to go so fast that only the TV cameras
can catch it. There is no TV coverage on the races I do so it feels fairly
safe ;)

Heck it would be easier. Don't have to keep adjusting the wire tension all
the time. Besides I only need the top gear ;)
