I have just found that you can run the ESKE (? forgotten the plastic fender name, very old) rear
fender _over_ the rear brake and it finally clears a 26x2.25 tire cleanly. Unfortunately you have to
clip off the rear bit of fender to make the geometry work, but that part is fended by the rear rack
so is unnecessary.
I was going to discard the fender but thought I'd try it. It had been worn through years ago by tire
rubs here and there and was starting to flap.
The appearance is of a fender for a rear suspension bike even though mine is a hard-tail.
