Hi all, I am a new cyclist and right now using Trek 3900 disc with shimano gear. Since yesterday after 37 mile riding, I am facing a problem with my right gear shifter. Gear is shifting properly from 2-3-4-5-6-7, but when I am lowering the gear like 6-5 or 4-3, it is not working. Rather, if I shift from 6 to 4 then it shift to 5 instead of 4 and then if I up the gear to 5 then it remains 5. There is a scree where the gear cable connects with the rear derailleur and if I move it a bit then gear starts to work differently like it does not go to up gear (4-5). So how could I fix it right now? Any help will be appreciable and encouraging for a me, the novice biker[IMG]/img/vbsmilies/smilies/smile.gif[/IMG]

It sounds like you might need to adjust your rear derailleur(RD). Here is a link that will tell you how to do that:

If that does not solve your problem, then you might have a sticking cable. For this, you will need to disconnect the cable from the RD and pull it out of the housings. Look for any rust spots. If you find rust, replace the housings and cable. If there is no rust, then spray some lubricant into the housings and rerun the cable to the RD. Reattach the cable to the RD and follow the directions in the link to adjust it.

The Park Tool site is great but you need to have a little background, otherwise you are going to end up confused as they go into adjustments for all of the different manufaturers RDs, including Rapid Rise RDs.
