What would be a cause for not shifting smoothly going uphill but Ok on flat level surface?

Parktool website list the following. Could this be a cause? My old cheapy Mongoose with grip
shifters is very smooth shifter but my new Gary Fisher with rapidfire shifters is very rough.

Modern indexing shift levers use dwell, which is a hesitation between movements in the lever. These
hesitations are timed to match the movements of the derailleur and the spacing in the rear
sprockets. The design of some derailleur and shift lever brands requires more of a push (or twist)
of the lever to complete the shift. The amount of extra push or twist is not consistent between
manufacturers and each rider must learn the particular attributes of his or her system.

It's the difference between shifting under heavy load and under "normal riding along load". If you
just soft pedal half a stroke when shifting uphill, it should shift fine.

Thanks for the input. The store I bought it from didn't have any hilly area to ride so I didn't know
it would be a problem until I bought it. Since my mongoose doesn't have this "heavy load" problem
what do you think the cause might be? Shifters, derailer, sprokets?

Beat me to it Gman.

Bill. The mind serves properly as a window glass rather than as a reflector, that is, the mind

Yes, he doesn't get that it's how they're ridden, it's not their configuration that matters.

I used to ride my 20 inch P.K over some of the same trails I do now...no difference.

a single speed bike is what I gave up years ago. All you retro weenies need to take it to alt.bmx.
You're tired ol' ******** will play well over there.
