One way to do this is to thread the old axle nut deep onto the new axle
first. After cutting, unscrew the axle nut and it should help reform
the thread.

Remove solid axle set.
Install hollow axle set.

Wing nuts may be out of style but they are an easy way to accomplish this.
The rear nuts tend to slip a little easier than a Quick Release but as long
as you are not in a super hilly area you should be fine.
