  1. Hi all,

    I've just serviced a front Vento (8sp, HPW, 1996?) wheel. I have the
    following questions:

    1) The hub has what looks like a race or a cup behind the bearing cup that
    holds the balls. I'm not sure what it is. I suspect it was just "cut-out" to
    remove weight. I wasn't sure what to do there, so I filled it with grease.
    Was that correct or was it unnecessary?

    2) Does this bearing adjustment follow Sheldon's advice
    (http://sheldonbrown.com/cone-adjustment.html) of allowing a slight play
    with QR lightly closed and no play & still free spinning when QR is tight?

    3) I used Pedro syngrease/grease gun. The axle felt sluggish and so I
    thought I put too much grease. I took out the axle and wiped off the center
    (which doesn't make any contact - only at the bearings, right?). The axel
    still felt smooth but heavy. Is this normal? The previous grease was
    reddish/brown and translucent (not opaque) and a little dried-out. In
    comparison, the Record (2001 - georgous) wheels are so frictionless that if
    the untightened skewer is put at horizontal (3 or 9) the axle (the hub, not
    the QR axle) turns (slowly) to drop the lever down to 6 O'clock position.

    This reminds me of when I serviced a Time Impact pedal and regreased it with
    Finish Line teflon grease, the pedal would turn smoothly, but would not
    spin, as would the other pedal. I kept removing grease, thinking I put too
    much, but it only improved mildly. In both cases, is the slow turning due to
    excessive grease or the thicker (higher viscosity) grease used? I suspect
    it's the latter. (I can't believe how easily and freely the Pro-fit pedals
    spin). I read in another thread that someone used Lubriplate 630-2. Is that
    a thin grease? What grease does Campy or other manufacturers use? I'd like
    to use a similarly light grease for pedals and hubs.

    4) When I put back the plastic caps on the ends, these caps rubbed against
    the nuts and added noticeable friction. What can I do to avoid the cap from
    rubbing?

    5) Is the rear hub as complicated as others described with the pawls and
    springs coming out during servicing. If so, I think I'll just ask the LBS to
    do it.

    I have a tendency to ask too many questions and get long...(tried to
    convince my parents that school was bad - Thomas Edison was my hero)

    Sounds like you did it right. We use a lighter grease but
    nothing wrong with yours. Lubriplate #630 is heavy for this
    application. Try 130AA. Or 107, 105, Aero even for the
    lightest useful Lubriplate greases

    The plastic seals will stop dragging after a few miles

    For the rear, look at the drawings first.
