There's a nifty collet pin vise that used to be sold in
hobby stores that is sold in hobby stores. With cable sizes
at 1.8 and 1.2 mm you might get one end to fit a derailer
cable and the other a brake cable. It's used to hold pins
for installation in holes, and small scraping tools. Anyway,
I sawed mine in half and kept it in my bike kit to serve as
a handle for a cable end.
It was a removable, replaceable, secure cable end that kept
the cable from unraveling and allowed pulling without
pliers. Totally superior to pliers, which crush the cable.
And no soldering.
The best I can think of now available would be a Jacobs
drilll chuck, 1/4 inch or smaller. Let me know if you
remember this Xacto or other brand hobby shop tool and where
to buy four of 'em. Or two...
It really helped with keeping the RD clean. I'd pull it and
clean it a lot.Those jockey wheels really pick up the crud.
