My old commuter/fire path ca. 1980 French bike's drive train is getting a bit clapped out, and I was thinking of trying an internal gear setup. I can't afford a Rohloff, but I can afford a Shimano Nexus 8-speed setup. My commute is 12 miles, mildly hilly but nothing to write home about. The bike has extremely long horizontal dropouts, so I think a Nexus would be a good fit. I was wondering if anyone in the know could tell me if this is a bad idea. Presumably internal hubs aren't quite as efficient as a derailleur setup in good nick, but I'm wondering if the difference would be noticeable on bike that's certainly not going to be used for racing. Any opinions?
