Whenever i have a break from the bike, (on holiday) the first time i ride is absolutely amazing, i feel fast and light (clydesdale LOL) and can average good speeds.
Yesterday i did a 30 mile ride and averaged 19.4Mph and the time before i had a 6mile sprint and averaged 21.5Mph.
After these rides the speed dips a little and i need a break again to reach this level again.

Is there something i can do to keep the speeds constant or increase them?

I am a clydesdale and 40 years old so i dont have much going for me.
Any advice?

Motivation and rest tend to help keep the speed up.

I used to be happy with my everyday speed knowing that if I took a day off I could do better.

Of course, if there are group rides where the intent is to keep the effort (or pace) up, there is a lot motivation to look good in the group.

I took yesterday off. I just did not sleep well and just getting out of bed was hard. Had there been a group ride I would have gone on it and would have done my usual effort. Today I did a bit better than usual. Must have been the day off.

yes rest can do wonders, for longer rides though you will found out that too many days off will affect your endurance ability,
