I've owned a Ridgerest for some years now and always sworn
by it, and scorned Thermarests - until this winter.
I'd never used the Ridgerest in lengthy sub-zero conditions
until last November at Coylum Bridge campsite. In the
morning I found the bottom of my down sleeping bag was quite
wet - enough to feel damp and cold inside. What I found was
that the warm-damp air from my body was condensing in the
little pockets formed by the ridges, until they filled up
with the water, which wicked into my bag. The mat was quite
wet with puddles of water in the ridges. It was so
uncomfortable that in the end I had to call into Aviemore
and buy a Thermarest - which was far more comfortable. Apart
from this problem, the Ridgerest if great for warmer weather
camping and far lighter than the Thermarest.
