Riding a road bike in a bit of slush=snapped off derailleur

...and I just had my bike fixed up a month ago. The slush got into the gears and formed a cake of snow in it. I guess it put lateral stress on the derailleur because the chain wasn't quite in the gears and it snapped off while I was going up the fairly steep hill to my apartment. Just 500 more meters and it would have been fine. Vittu. A bit colder and the snow wouldn't get thrown up in there. A bit warmer and there wouldn't be any snow.
