Riding at night: a strategy for survival?

Nothing new about it: The little furry mammals developed that strategy
to survive among the dinosaurs (which is why we are here)...

Anyway, now my next door neighbor wants to ride at midnight... And he
ain't one of those crazy bums on a Huffy. He even bought a vest with
blinking lights (DUI drivers and SUV drivers chatting on the cell
phone should be able to see him). And his bike cost him 2 grands
(important in this hierarchal jungle where you are what you drive), so
I guess he better find a use for it. The other day he told me he
didn't have the nerve anymore to ride in traffic (he ain't no chicken,
he's a veteran), which leads to this daring survival strategy.
Actually, I do the same with my canoe, where the motorboats put me at
the bottom of the food chain in the day time.

Well, our dinosaurs (SUVs and motorboats) make us get smarter and get
nocturnal. And I can only hope Darwin was right: "It is not the
strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but
the one most responsive to change."

NOTE: I told my neighbor to knock on my door. Just in case I'm
sleepless...

He could get a dynamo hub and some lights. The best dynamo
hub should be SON from Schmidt, but it's rather expensive.
The front and rear light could be from Busch + Muller, but
schmidt has a real nice LED light comming real soon now(tm).

All those lights are nice so you can see, but to be seen all you need
is that blinking vest. I guess.

Probably other people can see all those lights as well.

Unless some drunk decides you are an intersection.

Ever wonder why cops get killed more than anyone else in traffic
collisons?

Drunks zone in on the flashing yellow or red lights in the back window
of a patrol car, like moths to a flame.

Nope, because they spend a lot more time at well above the legal speed limit.

Thats right. Further more cops spend alot more time on the
roads than other people do, all that increases the chance
of getting involved in a car accident.

I guess so. I'm not so sure it would be much safer at night, as there
would be fewer but more dangerous drivers out there.

In the canoe, it's another story. Hardly any motorboats out there.

Because they are the worst drivers and ignore the rules?

I've done this a lot, having a job that at times has me working night
shifts and getting off in the early morning hours.

Riding on wide roads with no cars and no noise is kind of interesting
the first few times, but I found the lack of scenery a bit monotonous.

Early Sunday mornings are the best time to go. And I tended to wait to
begin until an hour after the bars close.

I forgot to point out to you and Rod, that based on your criteria,
truckers should have the highest fatality rates of all.

Wouldnt that be correct? They spend far far more time on the road
than anyone

Truckers are the best (and perhaps only good) drivers in America. They
undergo the training we all should be having.

Truckers dont die because they drive BIG trucks. They only harm
other people, no harm comes to them. Police cars are small cars
compared to trucks.

Nope, because they are inside vehicles which have a hell of a lot higher weight that
what they run into, and are way higher up than the poor sucker in the car is too.

Nope.

But there is much more involved than just time on the road.

They dont always get hit from the rear.

And those that do get hit when the car is stationary, are usually
OUTSIDE the car, in one of the most dangerous situations around,
in which they are in FAR more often than the average car driver is too.
