My partner and I will be in Umbria, Italy in a few weeks with a group. The group isn't cycling related, yet we would like to rent two road bikes for one day to see some of the area by bike. We have looked on the web for bike rentals but haven't been successful in finding a shop or company that meets our needs. Any suggestions on how to rent two road bikes for one day? We're particularly interested in renting them from the town of Umbertide.

Thanks.

Rentals are not as easy some times...

If you find a place that rents good road bikes they will probably require a hefty deposit, or to leave them some passport details (if not the actual passport which is a no-no...

). Then is the price which might be pretty expensive.

Around here (not Italy though) you can rent a heavy mountain bike for about 20-30 euro a day... Some places which rent road bikes are pretty expensive and if the bike gets "lifted" (they say that lots of things get "lifted" in Italy btw) you will end up paying lots and lots of money...

For the money you would spend on the rental you can buy a nice padded bike bag and carry your own bike to Italy. Use it for a day, re-pack it and take it back with you. A bike bag costs about 30-40 euro and an extra piece of luggage on the plane costs about another 20euro... With that you can actually use the bike for more then one day plus you probably get to do the tour with a better bike then the rental.

Another option would be to buy a bike when you are there. In some places in Europe like Holland or Germany (maybe Italy too) you can buy a bike for about 40euro... Its not gonna be a good one, probably a very second hand steel city bike but then you can try selling it back for 20euro and just spend 20 euro to have a bike whilst there...

If you are interested in doing an organized tour though, that might be a nice idea. There are lots of tourist offices that organize bike tours and usually you get a bike from them for about 5 euro extra to participate in the tour (which includes a guide, first aid, flat repairs, snacks etc) or you can participate using your own bike if it fits with the nature of the tour (trails, roads etc). These tours are lots of fun too!
