Would my 52/40/24 crank from my 8 speed road bike work fine on my 7 speed MTB. My MTB currently has a riveted compact crank 48/38/28 that it came with. Just slide the front derailer up and use a longer chain correct? Thanks

Sure, you can put your ROAD triple on your MTB frame ...

UNLESS the two bikes have exactly the same length & symmetry-and-type BB spindle, you'll want to move the road BB over, too. That is, you'll need the BB with the longer spindle so the road crank's chainrings & crankarms clear the chainstays.
