My current mountain bike which has served me many years has nearly had it and I am nearly too big
for it. So I am looking for a new bike which is the problem. I have just joined the CTC and Audax
and intend to do a lot of these rides which are mainly if not all on roads but also I go on holiday
to the French Alps every summer and do a lot of off road cycling. Ideally I would buy two bikes, a
road bike and a mountain bike. But then arises the problem of money, what to buy? I am in the price
range of £350-£500 for either bike. I have been looking at the Specialised Sirrus or the Marin Bear
Valley and for a mountain bike the Specialised Rockhopper. I am 13 and still growing. Can you
recommend these bikes and cheap places to buy them or recommend other bikes. Any help would be truly
appreciated.

£1000? Do your parents realise you'll have outgrown it in a year? My advice: get a couple of
secondhand bikes for under £500.

Like the man said, I would look at the second hand market, especially for road bikes. If there's a
cycling club near you (we have Palmer Park Velo in Reading) there may well be a ready exchange
market for the right size road bikes. Don't be tempted to get a bike with "room for growth."

Mountian bikes are less of an issue as there is always a strong second-hand market for decent
quality mountain bikes - but again I would buy one that fits, not one with room for growth.

Helen the PSF will give you good info about yoof-sized road bikes, I reckon
:)
