I've been told Carnac and Shimano make the widest shoes for road cyclists and my Shimano MTB shoes are definitely the most comfortable I have.

So what are good road shoes to get for the wide footed.

My old Carnac tri shoes are really not that wide.

I'm not sure how "wide" wide is for you (or what you want to spend), but I wear a 9½D to 10D in street shoes, depending on the last. I just bought a pair of Diadora Attacks and they fit like a glove over both athletic (i.e.thicker) and cycling socks (with proper adjustment). The Attacks are compatible with SPD,SPD-R, Look, Time Impact and Campy pedals/cleats. Nice looking shoe, IMO - functional without being garish.

I've had good luck with Sidi's Mega sizes.

Same here. My 10EEEs fit nicely in my 46 Megas.

For a related option: The Megas have wider soles, while the non-Mega
half sizes (e.g. size 44.5, 45.5, etc) have the regular sole but a more
generous toe box (per Sidi's web site).

Sidi megas are great. I wear mine in the winter, when I wear heavier
socks, so my feet don't freeze. Also they are great for solving hot foot.
