Ok just a quick question, I ride on a road bike as well as MB...I was wondering really if it was advisable me putting on some road tires/slicks on the MB, how much of a performance boost would there be/is it safe?

The reason is that I am looking to use my MB because I have a back ****le, I'm fine when on the MB but when on the roadbike I feel the ****le. I ain't doing any offroading, just wanna keep as much road performance as I can while on a MB...any other tips on what I can do, short of bying a hybrid bike?

People install 26" slicks on their mountain bikes all the time. Expect to gain about 2 to 3 MPH on average. For the most performance gains, I'd look for a tire width in the range of 1.0" to 1.5". Remember to also buy smaller width tubes to match the new tires (tubes can be rated slightly smaller than the tires, but not bigger).

I put slicks on my MTB - not for any performance gains, but mainly to give me a 'smoother' ride on the road.

Suggest watching the tyre pressure . . . I put some Specialised FatBoys on my MTB and pumped them up to 100psi. Started breaking no-name spokes, quite frequently.

Replaced with some brand name spokes and no more problems. Check the head of the spoke for a makers mark.

Good luck
