You could see this one coming. Michael Ball's capricious personality and desire to be able to fire his riders at will made working for him risky. His business of selling overpriced clothing was destined to take a huge hit in a bad economy. His team was a personal ego trip for him. Anyone could see that as soon as it was no longer fun for him or it affected his bottom line, he would viciously cut off the team and riders.

Expect a lot of domestic teams and races to come under financial pressure in 2009.

Nail meets head. The difference between Ball and Mark Cuban, another egocentric loudmouth owner with too much time and money, is that Cuban at least has an attention that spans more than five minutes and puts in the effort to put out a good team. Ball's just a douche.

It's like how self-absorbed cynicism briefly went out of fashion after 9/11. Garish kit for a team sponsored by a guy that sells $400 dollar blue jeans just doesn't play in a recession.
