I'm trying to figure out what the hell Brian Lopes' handlebar setup is in
this shot. It looks like a set of very wide flat bars with some kind of bar ends
that hang down. Maybe a set of Scott Rakes?

They look like they only bend about 80 degrees, Scott Rakes bend about 150
degrees.

Think he's sporting a Ken Maely hot shoe?

Hmm, you're right. I wonder what they are, then?

One on each foot, with a recessed cleat mount...

Here you can see they look like the drops on a regular bar:

But here, he seems to have ditched the extensions entirely:

I don't get it anyway, many people like wide bars for control,
but those drops seem like they would be way too wide. And
when you were in them your chest would be a giant sail.

Is Lopes really running a suspension fork? I can't see how
that would benefit you on a smooth road, and wouldn't there
be a bit of extra slop in the steering?

There they do look like Rakes.

If they're clamp on extensions, couldn't they be clamped on in a position
further inboard?

I found that a suspension fork did slow down the steering a lot. I had to
really rethink my turn-in points on familiar roads, otherwise I ran wide on the
exits. I imagine you could get used to it, though, especially if you ride bikes
that are like that all or most of the time. I didn't like it.
