RR: Typical Mountain Biker Goes for ride and (Gasp!) Enjoys Nature!

Did a couple of quick rides the last two evenings. I'm giving the SS a
little rest and have been on the creaky geared FS rig. I was REALLY sick
(again damnit! - rough spring this year) for three days beforehand and
could not keep any food in my body. One way or another it would find
it's way back out in record time (yuck!).
So I was feeling I was at less than peak condition and figured that was
excuse enough to use gears and suspension.

Both nights I was getting out a little late so I just did the quickest
~1 Hr dirt ride I could, Chicken Gulch (8-900 Ft. rolling climb, about
10 Miles round trip) from the house.

Monday I kept seeing this flash of white out of the corner of my eye
while cruising down the swoopy singletrack descent. I stopped to have a
look and it was this cool looking big owl that kept cruising up and down
the gulch and landing in trees next to the trail. He'd sit there and
look around and then silently stretch his wings as he dropped from his
perch and glide up or down the little gulch, maybe looking for an
unsuspecting meal. A neat sight indeed. I hear owls at the house all the
time but we don't actually see them all that much. I saw this guy three
times in about ten minutes - cool!

Last night I was riding down the same stretch of trail (which needs a
little work - maybe this weekend) and noticed the sage-covered hillside
up to the right was covered in white spots. I stopped and had a look and
it was a big herd of about 20 mule deer watching me. A couple were
nervously heading up the hill but most were just hanging out watching
me. I paused and listened to the quiet of dusk out in the sage-covered
hills. I watched the deer watching me as the ski turned a deep indigo
and I realized I'd better keep going or I was going to be caught in the
dark. It was nice and peaceful and I proceeded with a calm, satisfied
feeling.

So nothing special, except that I'm feeling healthy again (and hungry!).
I was happy to discover that I didn't seem to loose much or any strength
in my legs from my illness. The SS will come out again this weekend. She
needs to get out too!

Gasp! You road over perfectly innocent dirt to do this? How dare you!

Liar! BS! :)

Always good to find out that the time off the bike hasn't taken away
anything. I've been finding that less and less over the years!

Excellent visions Matt. You had me at owl. Nice write up.
