Stage 4 News
Robbie riding to win Tour Down Under WITH ''model domestique'' Lance Armstrong riding shotgun, veteran Gold Coast sprinter Robbie McEwen has warned rivals not to write him off as the winner of the Santos Tour Down Under despite slipping to fourth place yesterday. Holder of a record 12 stages in the Tour Down Under, McEwen admits it will be tough to make up the time required to win, but not impossible. Link: http://www.couriermail.com.au/ipad/robbie-riding-to-win-tour-down-under/story-fn6ck6f9-1225992561010 Cameron Meyer dares to win Tour Down Under AN AUDACIOUS attack has elevated superstar-in-waiting Cameron Meyer into the overall lead in the Santos Tour Down Under. The 2010 Commonwealth Games triple gold medallist is the third Australian to don the leader's jersey after his unexpected victory in the fourth stage yesterday. The win has given the 23-year-old hope of pulling off a major sting by claiming the overall win in Adelaide tomorrow. Link: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/cameron-meyer-dares-to-win/story-e6frf9if-1225992621214 Meyer ready to give his all to win CAMERON MEYER rose to the occasion when few expected in the Tour Down Under yesterday by taking the overall race lead and winning the fourth stage in a renegade breakaway - and he's now bracing himself to back it up by pressing the fancied sprinters in today's hilly fifth leg to Willunga. Meyer and three other riders from an initial six-man escape that set off midway into yesterday's 124-kilometre fourth stage from Norwood to Strathalbyn headed home a charging peloton that was led by fifth-placed Matt Goss (HTC-Highroad). link: http://www.smh.com.au/sport/cycling/meyer-ready-to-give-his-all-to-win-20110121-1a03y.html Track champ Cameron Meyer takes Tour Down Under stage four win CAMERON Meyer, having come to this race with a solid grounding on the velodrome, has shown he can now match it with the very best on the road. Three Commonwealth Games gold medals in Delhi and four rainbow jerseys in the points race, teams pursuit and Madison is proof positive that under the tight-fitting lycra, be it the green and gold of Australia, or the black and white of Garmin-Cervelo, he has a very big motor. Meyer, 23, has now chalked up his first win in a UCI-sanctioned World Tour road race. Meyer did it with some panache, figuring in a four-man breakaway that included teammate Matt Wilson, who selflessly sacrificed his chances of taking the stage by riding himself into the ground to put the man with the younger legs in position for the final sprint. To watch him slip on the ochre jersey in front of the massive crowd that had turned out in Strathalbyn yesterday proves to me the system to bring on talent in this country is working. The performance was a super, super effort, coming as it did just 10 days after the double celebration of his birthday and defence of the national time trial crown. Fellow Australian Cameron Meyer, a world track cycling champion in his second elite year with road team Garmin-Cervelo, claimed the ochre jersey after a gutsy stage win in Strathalbyn in the Adelaide Hills. Meyer, riding for the Garmin-Cervelo team, held off the sprinters and finished ahead of his breakaway companions, Vacansoleil's Thomas de Gendt and Laurens Ten Dam of Rabobank, after a 124-km ride from Norwood to Strathalbyn, near Adelaide. Link: http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/21012011/2/cycling-meyer-grabs-overall-lead-tour-under.html Cameron Meyer takes Tour Down Under lead as Mark Cavendish struggles Cameron Meyer became the fourth overall leader of the Tour Down Under in as many stages after he claimed victory on the 124km course from Norwood to Strathalbyn. Meyer was involved in a four-strong breakaway group and outsprinted the Dutchmen Thomas de Gendt and Laurens Ten Dam to win the fourth stage, which was good enough to earn him a 10-second lead over Ten Dam in the overall standings. Link: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/jan/21/cameron-meyer-tour-down-under-cavendish Double delight for Meyer Cameron Meyer swept to the top of the overall standings at the Tour Down Under after outsprinting his three remaining breakaway rivals on the fourth day of action. The Garmin-Cervélo rider moved clear of the bunch with team-mate Matthew Wilson, Vacansoleil duo Rob Rujigh and Thomas de Gendt, Rabobank's Laurens ten Dam and AG2R rider Blel Kadri, soon after the first sprint points had been decided in Gumeracha.
