  1. Hi,

I have been wearing Scarpa SL's for mountain walking and
trekking since 1987 and have never had any problems with
blisters or sore feet. I used to do a bit of snow and ice
climbing as well and I have an old pair of Asolo AFS 101
plastic boots that have never caused me any problems.

The level of winter walking I do now doesn't warrant the
Asolo's, but the SL's aren't quite up to it. So after a
reasonable time trying them on and walking round the shop I
bought some Scarpa Manta's. I started breaking them in on
easyish walks, but every time I go out in them I get a large
painful blister on each heel. I have tried one pair of
socks, two pairs of socks, new socks and changed the insoles
    for thicker Sorbathane ones.

The new insoles along with a single pair of Smartwool socks
seems to be the best combination so far, but I still get
blisters after about 8 to 10 miles. It feels as if the heel
cup is larger than the SL, so the thicker insoles make it a
    little better for a while?

Not sure really what I am asking, but has anyone else had a
similar experience with Manta's? Or can anyone suggest
    something else I can try?

    Thanks, David

  2. Not exactly the same experience, but similar. I've used
Mantas for a long time, and bought a pair of SLs recently
which give me blisters on one heel. I'm afraid I haven't
worked out a solution yet. As for the cause - they told me
in the shop that Scarpa have recently reduced the size of
the heel cup, but this doesn't seem like it's related to
that at all. So far I've put it down to poor workmanship and
will be looking for a replacement for Scarpas in future.

  3. Can't help other than say I use Manta's and never had a
problem. Suppose it's the fit, ok for some people and not so
good for others. There is a plaster on the market that's
specifically for blisters. Might it be your heels are a bit
tender now but if you use the plasters for a bit they may
heal up better and harden up again.

The part about the SL having a smaller heel cup matches
my experience. In my case that is better, the Manta heel
cup is definitely too big. Maybe I should try a 44 rather
    than a 45.

My SL's are 3 years old and the Manta's less than one year,
so I don't think it is a recent change by Scarpa!
