I am thinking of buying this bike with Ultegra 10 speed for 2006, anybody got one, ridden one, share any opinions? Or know of any online reviews? I am trying to choose between this and Specialized Tarmac and Trek Madone 5.2, all around the same price.

Hi

You should also consider the GIANT Advanced TCR, which runs a full Ultegra group set on the T-mobile team frame.

http://www.giant-bicycle.com/au/030.000.000/030.000.000.asp?model=10030

not sure if the same spec is available in the UK, but in Australia its good value for $5499 for around a 7.0kg bike.

Regards
Ken

Hi

Have'nt ridden the Scott but you should also consider the Giant TCR Advanced which is the T-Mobile team frame running the Ultegra groupset.
Not sure is you can get the same specs in the U.K but the Giant in Australia
is great value at $5500 AUD.

Cheers for your input. The bikes available in the UK are different. There is one TCR that has a mix of 105 and Ultegra, not as nice. I will try and find shops that sell all and give each one a test ride.

Here's some reviews....
http://www.roadbikereview.com/cat/latest-bikes/road-bike/scott/PRD_323664_5668crx.aspx

My LBS is a Scott Dealer and I ride with their Saturday morning group sometimes where plenty of Lads ride Scott's...they all really like them obviously...all I can say is they have the best Carbon weave look I've ever seen on a Bike...
But nobody can say whether you'll like it or not, only a test ride will tell....

Cheers then!!

Maybe you can order one from here in OZ, I'm sure a lot of places would ship one overseas for you, but U.K customs may cause a problem if there anything like australian customs.

The LBS where I got my TCR advanced team from is

http://www.cbdcycles.com.au/shop/shop/Shop/bikes/Giant/giant06road.

Maybe they could help you, after all the bikes are shipped from GIANT in Taiwan in the first place.

Here is another interesting TCR site.

A lot of the top of the range Scotts are getting returned with frame failure - esp around the head tube. One of my friends had this happen with catastrophic consequences (on a steep descent). Scott offered him a replacement frame. The LBS owner mentioned that this problem was fairly common with Scotts. He said no thanks!

I would go the Specialized. Its had great reviews both published and from friends.

Treks (& Giants) are like a$$holes. Everyones got them.

First I've heard of that problem. I have a CR1 and it has a 1000 miles on it already and I love it. A number of other people on my team also have them and none have experienced frame failures.

The LBS owner involved said they were getting about 1 in 7 top end Scott frames back needing replacement!

Sounds wierd, maybe there was a bad batch. I know at least 6 people riding CR1s, and none have reported any problems. One guy likes the CR1 so much he has two, one for racing and one for training!

I asked the lbs that supplies our team. We get a team discount on CR1s. I wasn't aware of single failure by a team members bike. He said he hadn't had to warranty any. And there a re quite a few on the team.

Also if you look on weightweenies they don't mention this huge problem with the frame. And the CR1 is one of the more popular bikes on the board.

Yeah, it's not even a contest. The Scott is in a different category than your other choices, and if you can get it for the same amount of coin it's a no-brainer. Get the Scott, you'll save at least 200g on the frameset and get better customer service. Go to www.weightweenies.starbike.com for more info and feedback from people who actually know what they're talking about. Good luck!

By way of counterpoint:
(1) You can't say that the Scott is better for the OP given that you do not know which bike will fit them better.
(2) 200 grams of non-rotating weight saved is probably about 0.3% of the total weight of bike & rider. Most normal riders could easily afford to lose more than 200 grams in body weight. If you need to do it in a hurry, take a couple of mouthfuls of food or drink less or take a laxative. Or fill your drink bottle a little less.
(3) If you are a pro and cannot lose 200 grams, then you will be UCI weight restricted to a 6.8 kg bike which will be easily achieved with the Scott or the Specialised or many other options.
(4) Why would you equate weightweenies with people that "actually know what they're talking about"? Someone who is willing to spend hundreds of dollars to save a few grams on a stem, for example, is telling us a lot more about their personality and the size of their nether regions than they are about their knowledge of bikes. You might also find that the pro riders are almost without exception not weight weenies and will very often choose bits of equipment that are stronger or more comfortable at the expense of a few grams.

The LBS owner was a Scott dealer so it would not have been in his interest to make this up.

Also, amongst the guys that I ride with whose opinions I trust, those on the Scotts say that it is an alright bike, nothing special, and that their next bike probably won't be a Scott. Those guys on Specialized bikes love them and will definitely be getting another one next time.

Patch, have to agree with you here. I admit to being impressed when I picked up this sub-900 gram frame at my LBS; the allure of lightweight is undeniable. However, the rational side says the value of this weight-savings in the real world is about zip, and that trading off strength and durability for weight savings could be a bad idea in the long run. After all, most of us who aren't elite sponsored racers plan to keep our equipment more than a season or two.

One of the LBS owners is now riding and racing this frame. He's a no-hype guy, and stays up on developments. Will ask next time I see him about any reports of failures in the US. The failures could just be due to an isolated batch problem, although lack of quality in a super-light (and expensive) CF frame is hardly a comforting thought.

Funny thing is when I make a search for bicycle failures and Scott failures in particular, I find the only place where I have found any mention of failure is from you. I'm not saying you are wrong, mind you, but what you are saying is based on anecdotal hearsay and I have not found any other data that supports your oberservation. All I've found is that Scott CR1 is a high-quality frame, no better or worse than any other high-end carbon fiber frame. I don't ride a Scott, Specialized, Giant, Trek or Cannondale. I do ride, however, a full custom carbon fiber bike made by Calfee Design.

I also study carbon fiber techonology and chemistry. Just to give you some perspective.

We must have gotten a dud batch here in Australia.
(I also don't ride any of the brands mentioned!)

Maybe you got counterfeit ones. There are a lot of counterfeit bikes in the Phillipines with names like Colnago, Specialized, and Scott USA. I saw them when I visited there.

I found this info on the Scott CR1, and was very impressed that they could build such a light bike that performed so well in lab testing. Makes like Colnago didn't even pass these tests.

Go to Results and look in the Road Bike section.

I doubt that there were lots of failures based on the above.
