  1. Sorry if this got posted twice, looks like my first got lost....

I'm looking to do some riding in the SE USA (Georgia, NC, SC) about 100
miles per day with some challenging climbs (I live in South Florida so
right now it is hot, as well as always flat). Skill level is advanced,
but since there (hopefully) would be significant climbs,
    intermed-advance...

Looking to get something with some altitude, a little more moderate
temperature (going hand in hand of course), perhaps a cabin-like
lodging where I could spend the 1st week of Aug.

Any suggestions of location, lodging, ride routes? I'm hoping to
minimize traveling time to and from there (I only have like 5 days).

    Thanks.....

There are some good routes in North Georgia -- a regular six-gap ride around
Dahlonega, a Mountain Madness ride. Go to the Southern Bicycle League site,
www.bikesbl.org and look under Cnowledge - Ride maps. There are several
route maps there that may interest you -- I can tell you which are N.Ga. if
you're interested.. Or you can post and I'm sure someone can help. (I'm a
member, but I think these are open to everyone. If you have trouble viewing
the site, let me know and maybe I can download and send you the maps.) You
may be able to base somewhere like Helen, or Unicoi state park, and go from
    there.

I know of a few books that might help you -- "Bicycling the Blue Ridge," by
Elizabeth and Charlie Skinner, and "Best Bike Rides of the South," by the
same folks. Never used 'em, but I own them.

Hope this helps -- I'm a flatlander myself, so I can't help much with
    mountains :-)

It'll probably be hot, despite the elevation. Sorry, bad week. Try
    September. :/

Road or mountain? For road riding, I've heard the Cherohala Skyway
outside of Tellico, TN is nice, although I've never been up it.
Supposedly it's well paved and lightly traveled, with a constant gradient.

One of my favorites starts by staying in Townsend, TN, right outside
GSMNP. Get up early 5 days a week, climb up the ridge into Cades Cove,
circle the cove, eat ice cream, go back down and shower off. Avoid
Wednesday and Saturday, when lots of other cyclists drive madly up the
road to ride it when it's closed to vehicles. Other days,
(surprisingly, even Sunday), road traffic up the ridge is pretty light
up to about 9:30. Going down, of course, a few maniacs may try to pass
you, but only if they can get around the RV you left at the top.

These two are about as far from Atlanta as the Tsali mountain bike trail
    outside of Bryson City, NC.
