Setting running rhythm

As someone just returning to running after many years, do you guys
have any suggestions on setting a running rhythm/pace when running by
yourself?

I do an occasional run with a partner and have no problems running
30-45 minutes at a good pace. But when I try running alone, I can't
seem to find my rhythm--that comfomfortable "zone" I get when I run
with a partner or group.

I tried to listen to music, hoping that will help me manage a steadier
pace, but the music pumps me up too much and I end up going too fast
at the beginning and then fading after about 20 minutes!!!

Thanks!

Practice. Try this: Left, right. Left, right. Repeat.
