Tonight, Phil was talking about Cadel Evans, and how he is going to try for the time trial. You have to ride as hard as you can, because you don't know how hard the other riders are going to ride (prisoners dilemma).
But you do, if you are the last riders. And the last riders are the leaders. How is that fair?
Maybe I'm too egalitarian, but I'd prefer the leading riders to ride first so the others have just a ever so slight advantage given to them.

You ride an ITT in a stage race as hard as you can because you're riding for cumulative time. It doesn't matter what order it's done in. see Zabriski at last year's first stage for an example of how this works.

Weather conditions can change which can hinder OR benefit either end of the field.
And yeah, not so much fun having the fastest riders go first and setting an unbeatable time.. snore.. 🙂
