Shaving or waxing?

I've decided it's time to get rid of the leg hair, but what to do? Shave or wax?

I'm a guy with fairly hairy legs, so waxing would be incredibly painful. Do I just take it so it won't be so bad next time, or just keep shaving them?

Also, if waxing is the way, do I do it myself or go get in done by a pro?

I hope someone can resolve this conundrum for me.

Why not an exfolliant like Nair? Though personally, I'm keeping my leg hair:D

I would recommend getting it done by someone who knows exactly what they are doing. I wont lie to you, it may hurt a bit especially as your legs are pretty hairy. If you do it yourself though, there is no telling what you'll do. Besides, when it's done properly the hair is lifted from the shaft and won't grow back for a long time. A word of advice though, you will need to have more than just stubble for a proper waxing. The best of luck to you!

Take it from me, waxing hurts big time. I'm luck in so much as i'm not that hairy so a quick once over with the Mach 3 twice a week is enough.

If you do decide to wax go to a reputable salon and have it done professionally. Most are accommodating and there's little or no stigma attached to it these days.

NEVER, i repeat NEVER, let your wife or partner do it for you. They derive a perverse satifaction from seeing you wimper like a little girl.

Ah, personally I just braid mine and tuck the ends into my socks!

Thanks for that. I'll take your advice and get it done by a professional. I'll post again post waxing to let you know how I take it .

cheers.

Good luck James! Be brave.:) Deirdre

I went and got it done...
don't know what all the fuss is about. Sure, it's a little bit uncomfortable, but I wouldn't say it hurts. Anyway, if you can stomach cycling, you shouldn't have any probs with waxing.

...only problem is that I'm getting ingrown hairs on my upper legs. I'm exfoliating like they told me to, but I'm still getting 'em.

Anyone got any suggestions?

cheers

I'm really glad you had it done by a pro. You definetly would have known what all the fuss was about had you tried to do it yourself. I'm sorry to hear about the ingrown hairs. I've had that problem in the past but only with shaving. do your best to free them. They can turn into nasty boils which you never will want to endure. They are very painfull and potentially can keep you off your cycle for a period if they get bad enough. Next time try not to wax high up where you have very tender skin. The shorts will cover that area anyhow. Use a more abrasive exfoliating pad and really scrub your leggs. They sell these pads for acne. It may feel like steel wool at first but you get used to it and eventually enjoy how smooth your skin feels. I can't recall the name right now but they are white and tear shaped. The pharmacist or person in the skin care section will know exactly what to give you. Feel better!

I have to disagree with you there. I not only would never find any fun in seeing my boyfriend in agony, but would feel so horrible about hurting him I'd probably break down crying myself.

I tryed to wax my legs myself once...OUCH! After one leg, I gave up.
Definately better to have a professional do it. I have had a heck of a time finding someone to do it though. I call on the phone and theres always a really long pause before they say no.
So I still havent had it done professionally but its GOTTA be better than doing it yourself.

So in the meantime, Im still shaving. Once a week with a few days of really bad stubble.

That's not only unusual since any salon I've spoken with say they have both male and female clients. I've been checking prices for bikinie waxing myself. They tell me it is very surprizing how many male clients they have in for waxing. Next time someone says no to you ask them if it is not sexist to turn down male clients. They may change their tune. You could sue for this and gain a hansome amount of money. Another possibility is they may be homophobic. Next time you call a salon tell them straight out that you are a cyclist then get into the waxing questions. I think you may find them far more accomodating if they know why you want your legs waxed. Ladies have it done all of the time so it can't be that they don't know how. My best advice would be to speak with your male cycling friends and see where they go. You also should go to a salon that has as a side completely devoted to facials and waxing so you not only have privacy but also someone who is devoted to doing only skin care. You definetly won't want to be dead in the center of a salon in your underwear surrounded by women having their hair done. Good luck! Please let me know how things worked out for you. Worst case scenario will be that you hire a lawyer to sue the places that said no to you and end up with enough cash to have your very own private skin care specialist which isn't all bad, just a pain in the neck, law siuts that is. You may even want to speak with an attorney now just to know where you would stand in such a situation consultations are always free. I'm sure you would have to have telephone conversations of rejection on tape eventually which is legal as long as one person (you) is aware the conversation is being recorded and the other person is not a child.

My personal experience with Nair when I was younger was that it caused lots of ingrown hair. The product may have improved since then.

Out of curiosity, was your hair at least 1/4" when you had it waxed? the whole idea behind waxing is that it will take a while to grow back. You shouldn't have stubble and ingrown hair already. Your hair also will become thiner eventually after several waxings

Thx for the tips wackydeirdre. Are you an attorney by chance? hehe.
I think Ill try your approach next time and see if I have better luck.

I wish I could say I were an attorney. I'd have lots of money. I'd also work for you Pro Bono. Sexisim always has really annoyed me and despite popular opinion it really does go both ways. I guess it just isn't as newsworthy for a guy not to be allowed in a salon as it is when a woman is hit on by her boss. I feel it's comperable to African Americans not being allowed to sit in the same restaurant as whites though, don't you?. You can use that line if you need to by the way. I have had many unfortunate dealings with courts, lawyers, etc. thanks to my ex - husband though. I also was a paralegal for some time also so I guess I've learned the ropes along the way. I hope things work out for you and you get some waxing soon. It feels so much better once it's done (when done properly) and won't grow back for a while. A word of advice though, as much as you'll hate this, let your hair grow in as much as possible prior to your waxing so the hair lifts out nicely and takes a while to grow back for a while and you get your money's worth out of it. Also use a Buff Puff on your legs when it begins to grow back in to avoid ingrown hair.
Now to completely change topic, what's it like in the South Pole and where do you cycle? Do you have nice paths there? I suppose winter cycling doesn't go on for long. Last winter I had to stop cycling in early January I did Pilates to keep in shape but didn't at all enjoy and really didn't get started again until some time in March because we had about a foot of snow on the ground the whole time. then lots of rain which wouldnt normally bother me but the roads were really sloppy. I had to deal with tons of sand when I started again which made things pretty difficult and sort of made a mess of my gears. You must have to clean them all of the time yourself, what exactly do you do for maintenance? Do you have lots of sand on the roads? I'm going to have to change my brake pads soon as I have a road bike and was constantly brakeing so I wouldnt be falling off my bike. I also was getting used to clipless pedals at the time. The first time I rode with them I forgot to unclip my shoe in time when I stopped in my driveway and fell over flat on my good leg. I wrecked my other leg in a skiing accident and it doesn't have a very good range of motion. I landed on my lawn which was good since I didn't get hurt but I was lying there stuck to my pedals and so embarassed. I felt so stupid, but I couldnt stop laughing thinking about what I must have looked like. Finally, I got my leg out of my pedal using both arms and managed to get up. Pretty goofy, huh? Take care, write back soon.

My personal experience with Nair for men is that it burns so bad, I wont use it. Ill stick to shaving 3 times a week.

I followed the advice on exfoliating the bejeezus out of my leg. The hairs are starting to pop out that were ingrown and they're clearing up nicely. Thanks for the tip.

Now that you mention it, I'm pretty sure it burnt my skin as well. I wasn't able to use deoderant for 1 - 2 days after I used it.

Yeah I got one of those exfoliating pads this weekend and had overnight results (of good nature).
Great tip. =)
