I have a Trek 7300fx that needs a new crankset. Since I ride 99.9% on the
road, I was wondering if I could use something like the Shimano 105 fc-5505
in place of the Shimano MTB 48/38/28 cranks that came stock on the bike.

TIA

Must be either a really difficult or really stupid question :)

The short answer is maybe. I'd check with Shimano, there are models but
then there are sub-models and that's where it gets pretty tricky.

Two problems with this. A road crankset on a upright hybrid (even an FX) may
be too hard to push due to the un aero posisiton. The other problem would be
with your front deraileur not working with the bigger chainring. If you
want something cooler and lighter, may I suggest a cross crankset such as
the TruVativ Elita. Combine that with a new bottom bracket (if your still
rocking the OEM) and you could save yourself some serious weight as well.

Thanks for the input... I will look into this :)

I would perhaps look at changing chainrings instead of the entire
crank. Bigger rings with the FD probably won't be an issue when
adjusted by a good wrench.
TA makes some nice rings probably in the 110/74 BCD of that crank.

???This makes no sense. Unaero postion how determines that the gent can
use a 52, say 17 ratio when on the level? Have ya seen any modern
bicycles lately? Most are pretty 'unaero' and some even have a 53/11
gearing.

The fd for a 48 would probably be fine with a 52, just needs a good
wrench to adjust it. Cannot use a road FD as the left shifter isn't
compatible.

Not necessarily so. I have an flat bar road bike with a 52, and it's not a
problem. It's pretty quick regardless.

Could he possibly look at a compact double with a 50T?
