With indexed front deraileur& STI, I believe cranks came with matched pairs like 39A, 52A which had to be paired together. But can I use 39 chainring from Sora and a Ultegra 52 ring? Has anyone tried it?

Yes you can.
Yes, I tried it and am totally satisfied. Finish isn't as attractive on Sora, but price is quite attractive enough to make the difference for me.
