The quality of Shimano components works like this in road bikes:

Dura Ace Ultegra 105 Tiagra Sora

How does it "work" in Mountain bikes?

Currently:

XTR XT LX Deore Alivio then a few others that you really never want on a MTB

Shimano likes to mix things up every few years and change the names of the middle groups.

It doesn't matter if you ride and SS.
