Let me first say that I am a total noob to the cycling world. With that, my cycling experience has been limited to me riding my '09 Giant Cypress through my neighborhood, parks and campgrounds (I'm an avid RVer).

I'm preparing to buy a Giant Defy 1 from my LBS and in doing some research I came across some less than favorable reviews of the 105s that come on the Defy. My question is: Does a list exist that rates the Shimano (road)components from worst to best? Are the 105s problematic or did I read reviews from grumpy people?

Thanks in advance for any help. I am looking to ride mostly as a way to get in shape and exercise the ole'ticker. A recent medical scare and my Doc, who said get in shape or else, has motivated this 36yr old male to start riding.

Mantooth.

105 works as well as it is set up. Frankly under normal load 2300 will work fine as well. If it isn't shifting properly then take it back to the store and have them adjust it.

The 105 is pretty good gear. Don't be put off by those reviews.
