I'm looking at changing out my 9-speed shimano triple to a 10-speed double and I know I need to get a new rear dérailleur and cassette. But do I need to to get a new 10-speed crankset or will the older shimano (ultegra 6500..etc) work with a 10-spd chain? I have an ultegra 9-spd double derailleur as well but will I need a 10-spd FD as well or is the 9-spd compatible? I don't want to spend too much as this would primarily sit on a trainer.

9 speed cranks will work fine with 10 speed chain. You can probably get away with using your old 9 speed derailler, but it will be a long cage coming from your triple. FD might work as well, but that could be finiscky. Try it and see, you can always purchase a 10 speed double specific one later.
Not trying to tell you how to spend you money, but why upgrade just to use it on the trainer? Seems like a waste of cash to me.

I'm actually getting a powertap wheel built that is 10-spd for my race bike. I would like to be able to use both bikes with the powertap wheel...hence switching to 10-spd. My old bike is still 9-spd and would like to be able to switch wheels when I commute and/or have to use the trainer. Otherwise, yes, it would be a waste of money. Thanks for the info.
