Yes, the number of speeds on the cassette has little to do with it.
The important difference betwixt the "9-speed" and "10-speed" triple
front derailers is that the "9-speed" version was optimized for a
52-42-30, while the "10-speed" is optimized for 52-39-30.
If you're not hung up on the Ultegra label, and assuming you have a
52-42-* crank, you would likely do better with a 105 or Tiagra
derailer. These are optimized for 50-39-* chainrings, an 11 tooth gap
instead of 13, and closer to the 10 tooth difference from your 52-42-*
crank (if that's what you have.)
