Craig, I think the deal is that if you do manage to get the cleats recessed, you'll definitely have
to trim the knobs/cleats on the shoe quite a bit to allow the pedal axle to move freely. The BeBop's
have a very low "stack height" (what Time calls "bio position"), which is a good thing; but it does
require slight shoe modification.
I have a couple of pairs of Diadora MTB shoes (Kava and Jalapeno), which fit like a glove, and work
great with the BeBop cleats. I did have to shave a few mm off of the shoes in a couple of spots,
though. I used a utility knife - worked fine.

That's all I use on all of my bikes now - mountain, road DF and recumbent.
