Hi, I not sure what kind of bike to buy, and I am completely new at this. This bike will mostly be used for road travel, to school and work, but I would also like to go to on trails on the weekend. My budget is about $600 and I don't know whether to get a road, mountain, or hybrid bike. Since this will primarily be used for road how detrimental will having a mountain bike, or will it be worth it to buy a hybrid, or a road bike.

This is what I'm looking at as far a mountain bike.

Trek 6000

And Hybrid

Please tell me what you think, or ask any questions that you feel are applicable, it would be much appreciated.
Thank You. -Jai

I owned a Trek 7.3fx with disc brakes and was fine on the road but no good at all on trails. Any pebble, hole, rock, dime you will feel on this bike. If you are not interested in a road bike and just want a bike too get around on without much concern for going fast I'd go with a mountain bike you can always get slicks for it if you find you'll be riding on the road a lot. I was a beginner in the spring bought the hybrid and thought it was great till I tried out a road bike, wish I'd bought a road bike right off the bat. Anyway happy shopping and if I where you I'd really consider a road bike if you'll be spending 90% of your time on the road, you will not regret it.
