  1. I have always believed that spinning a higher cadence on climbs preserves the leg muscles far longer than grinding heavy gears. This makes the idea of a singlespeed setup interesting as a constraint-based riding experiment, rather than a strict training prescription. Using a fixed ratio forces a different approach to pacing and cadence choices since you cannot simply shift to a lower gear when the gradient increases.

    It seems like a useful way to experience how route selection and gear ratios interact without promising a specific strength outcome. However, there is a fine line between a challenging ride and a setup that is simply inappropriate for the terrain.

    For those who have tried this, how do you determine when a single gear ratio has become a hindrance to your pacing rather than a helpful constraint?

  2. The shift from a helpful constraint to a hindrance usually happens the moment you stop spinning and start grinding. When a gear ratio forces you to mash the pedals just to maintain momentum on a gradient, you lose that efficiency and start burning through your legs. Transitioning to standard road ratios is all about focusing on a smooth, high-cadence spin rather than trying to power through a gear that is too tall for the slope. If the cadence drops to a point where you cannot keep a fluid rhythm, the ratio is no longer a training tool, it is just a bottleneck.

  3. That bottleneck often depends on the power to weight ratio. Even when maintaining a fluid rhythm, a rider carrying more weight may hit that wall much sooner on a steep gradient than a lighter rider using the same cadence. The gear ratio might feel appropriate for the rhythm, but the sheer energy cost of moving more mass uphill can turn a helpful constraint into a hindrance regardless of how smooth the spin is.
