  1. Basically looking for recommendations. I want something fairly basic
that I can take into the hills and not be paranoid about taking it out
    in the rain.

I'm not a hot-shot photographer so I don't need anything fancy. At the
minute I have a 3 year old Nikon Coolpix (similar to the url below) so
something along those lines with waterproofing would be perfect.

Online recommendations would be an added bonus

How about a waterproof camera case? I've got an Ortlieb case for my
Coolpix 995. I've walked all day in the rain with it and the camera
    remained dry.

Morgan Computers have this: Olympus FE-140 - 6.0 Megapixel Camera for 70
quid. Waterproof to 3m claimed, although personally I don't think I'd
test it! There are also several other Fuji & Nikon compacts for under
    100 quid.

I have an Olymppus Mju 725 SW (now replaced by the 770 SW?) which is
completely waterproof (I've taken underwater video with it) so it should
manage the rain, and they say it's shockproof foor being dropped 1.5 m
(haven't tested that, don't intend to!). It's also very small and light
so hangs off a shoulder harness D-ring without getting in the way.

Not the cheapest around, you do pay for that waterproofing. Only other
downside is there's no viewfinder, you have to work off the screen which
can be a bit of a fiddle in bright sun.

Been very pleased with mine, in my position as a fellow "not hot-shot
    photographer".

Even the non-waterproof Olympus mju cameras are weatherproof ... every
opening has little rubber seals around the edge and I can attest that
they can certainly easily withstand a good soaking if kept in a not so
waterproof camera case on a very wet day and still work. I have the mju
500 which I believe is now obsolete, but there are newer models in the
    range now which have a pretty good optical zoom (5x, 36 - 180mm (35mm
equiv)) and also image stabilisation. The one I have my eye on is the
    mju 780.
