Slow start- Frustrated in Europe

Hi everybody, I am new here, although I have started WW numerous times. It looks like a
really nice NG.

I need some advice. I am doing the program alone, and, unlike previously, the start has been pretty
slow. This is really frustrating, because I am used to 2-3 kg weight loss the first week, and I have
been exercising unusually hard, too. I have been taking 1-2 classes a day, aerobics or yoga, or
both, and have consumed 15-22 points per day. In addition, I have been exercising on my bike.Yet my
total loss is only 1.5 kg
(3.30 pounds). I know they always say it is better to lose weight slowly, but I would like to see
some rewards for all those aerobics classes where everybody else seems to know the moves by heart
and I am always bumbling one move behind.=)

My starting weight was 81 kg (178.5 pounds) and now I am at 79,5 kg (175 pounds). I am 162 cm (5.3
ft.) tall.

Anybody have any idea why this is happening or comforting thoughts?

Cheers, Soili

Hi Soili, and welcome to the group. You are doing lots of exercise, so I'd
suggest you're building muscle. Have you taken your measurements recently?
You might find they are going down where the scale isn't. Here's oour

Welcome to this great newsgroup where you'll receive lots of support, advice, and encouragement.
Once a week on Sundays, I post a list of links that newcomers to asdww might find useful. You may

Here's a short synopsis of the USA program by Joyce -

How many points you can eat is only based on your current weight, as you lose weight those points
allowed will decrease (logic is that your body will need less to operate). At 183 pounds and based
on the new US flexpoints system, you will have a set point target of 24. In addition to this you are
allowed 35 flexpoints to be used throughout the week ... as well as any activity points you earn on
a particular day. When your weight drops to 175, your target drops to 22 points ... weight reaches
150, target once again drop to 20 points. 3 servings of dairy of recommended per day, 5 servings of
fruit and veggies, minimum of 6 glasses of water.

To calculate food and activity points, I love this computer desktop calculator ...
http://www.zythra.com/downloads/points.exe

The basic plan is easy. Eat at least your minimum daily number of points. Points do not carry over
from day to day. You are allotted 35 weekly flexpoints to be used at your discretion ... can divide
them up and use daily (would be an additional 5 points per day) or save them and use them for a
special occassion during the week. Activity points are earned based when exercising, but can ONLY be
used on the day they are earned.

If you can afford $15/month, the online ww program might be a great thing for you to look into.
There is lots of information available, as well as the food point database and journaling system.

Joyce WW starting weight: 228.8 - 2/5/02 current weight: 133.3 Lifetime: 4/4/03

Please note that if you live in onther countries (UK, Australia, NZ, Europe), the Points plans are
different. The UK and Australia/NZ calculate points based on saturated fat and total kilojoules.
Most of Europe calculates based on total fat and total kilojoules. The desktop calculator above can
handle all of these programs.

Disclaimer: As an unmoderated Usenet newsgroup, asdww is unusual in that most of the people who
participate are respectful, considerate folks who freely share their experience with and knowledge
of WW, weight loss, and maintenance. Yet occasionally, spammers, trolls, and flamers show up to post
advertising, false information, insults, and the like. Nearly all of the time, people like this are
just trying to yank someone's chain. Most of the regulars on this newsgroup offer their experience
as a suggestion to try if you're stuck, but are quick to advise that each person has to find what
works for him/herself. If someone posts something that doesn't sound right to you, ask the
newsgroup, ask your WW leader, or ask your health professional.

Much success on your weight loss journey! WW works!

Welcome aboard.

I suspect that you might be eating too little and your body is in starvation mode. At 178.5 pounds
you should be eating at least 20 points of food each day. I don't know the range for the Europe plan
but the minimum is 20 points. This is without any exercise figured in. Here's a link to their new
Fast Track menus that give you 20 points a day as a starting point.
http://www.weightwatchers.com/downloads/1033/Util/art/EatingGuide.pdf

Add some extra points to cover the exercise and you might see a change. Good luck.

You didn't say how long you have been on this 'kick' - Jan 1?

You seem to be doing OK for now but it sounds like you are running out of motivation and need some
extra support or coaching to keep your goals in focus. Since you stated that you have tried many
times before it sounds like you are in a yoyo situation. You need to make a lifestyle change that
will last even after your goals are met.

Take a gander at http://livefit.co.nr

There is some good advice, encouragement and coaching available to help you KEEP your weight off.

Stay Positive,

Larry

3.3 pounds is a great loss, but you don't tell us how long you have been following the ww program.
Is this your first week?

If it's been longer, then my next thought is ... EAT MORE! Contrary to popular belief, you must eat
in order to lose weight, and 15-22 points is NOT enough for you current weight if you are exercising
as much as you say you are. Eating too little will send the message to your system that you are
trying to starve it. The end result will be that your body will hang on to everything it can, in a
valiant attempt to survive. At 178 pounds, bear bones minimum that you should be eating is 22 points
(on the US system anyway). And probably should be eating your activity points ... or at least some
of them. But eating only 15 points a day is NOT good.

Adding those points back into your routine may show an increase at first in your weight ... but
stick with it! It can take a few weeks for your body to once again adjust and realize that you are
not trying to starve it. Then those pounds will start disappearing again.

Hi Julie, I think you may be right! I have lost 4 inches from my waist, so at least something seems
to be happening with the measuring tape, even if the scales are letting me down. I wonder if that
counts as a NSV, then?

Thank you for the links, I will study them. Thanks to everybody else, as well, for the supporting
messages. I started the program in the beginning of the year, but this really only counts as week 3,
as I did now weigh myself the first week. I will have to try to remember that the extra kilos took a
long time to pile on, so it is not a moment's work to get them off...

Thanks. It could be true. We will see, I have already started eating more, but I feel guilty, even
though I know I am allowed to have all those points. Hate losing that little halo that seems to
hover above my head whenever I stay under 16 points. The body seems to be really quick to go into
starvation mode, after all, I had only been following the programme for two weeks. I somehow always
believed it takes a longer time for the starvation mode to start.

Yes, that may well be the problem. I will start eating my points, but I am really unwilling to add
any for the exercise I take.

Funny you should ask, I lived in the Dallas area for five years, and returned home in 2001.
Sometimes I miss it, especially the shopping. =) However, having to go everywere by car also
contributed to my weight. I am sure I still have quite a few Texan fat cells on my hips!

Soili, I asked that because a friend of mine had an exchange student several years ago - her name
was Soili. When I mentioned that someone by the name of Soili posted to the ng, she said, oh
please ask if she is the Soili I know! I'll have to disappoint her & tell her that you're a
different Soili.

that is a start, but by eating under and not taking the aps you are double
deficiting your body. I never take aps as I rarely exercise. As I have
lost I have begun moving more doing regular housework that I do not count
but I always eat my daily points or I show a gain, this one of those areas
where we have to work out what is best for each of us and I think it can
vary greatly, Lee
