  1. Hi all, I wonder if you can help.

I have been cycling for a few years on and off but recently took the plunge and bought a road bike - I have started out fitting in a couple of 20 - 40 mile rides and everything is good so far........except my shoulders and upper back.

Any ideas why this is happening? The bike is the right size for me but I wonder if I am maybe grabbing the bars too tight as I get used to the new bike and riding position?

If anyone can help I'll be happy to hear from you.

    Thanks

    S

  2. Whenever someone complains of upper back or neck pain, the first thing I suspect is the distance from the saddle to the bars to be too short. If it turns out to be the case, you will likely need a saddle adjustment and usually a new stem. You may want to get another opinion on your fitting.

  3. You may also be 'shrugging' your shoulders upward during harder efforts. I know I do this on climbs if I'm not careful. Your bars could also be too narrow or too wide.

  4. Thanks both of you, I will get the spacing on the bike looked at and also try and be more aware of my riding position and ensure that I am not tensing up as things get tough.

    Thanks

    S
