SOS need help with Sturmey-Archer S3C Rear Hub/Raleigh

Today was a wonderful day to ride a bicycle. I have taken on
to rehabilitate an antique bike. I have taken apart one of
those older Raleigh Bicycles of which had sat by itself for
10 years. The rusty thing that it used to be, has become an
admiration to behold once again. I took everything apart and
polished it and repacked the bearings. The rear hub a Sturmey-
Archer S3C, was disassembled and cleaned and then
reassembled again. I rode it for about 10 miles to test it
out, from San Mateo to Burlingame. I believe that there is a
problem with the hub in that I am only getting 2nd and 3rd
gear to operate. When the gear shift is in the 1st gear
position there is a slight clicking within the hub
( Iread that when the 1st gear is engaged that no clicking
is made from the hub), additionally it feels like the
2nd gear is still engaged. I have attempted to adjust
the cable, possibly I have incorrectly adjusted it. If
cable adjustment is not the reason why it is not working
perfectly can you suggest another possible reason why
1st gear is not engaging yet? Any positive, and
constructive help from someone will be greatly
appreciated. Thanks in advance, greg :)

Cable adjustment is 90% likely to be the problem.

Some tips:

I read those articles and have tried correct adjustment of
the cable as described in the article. Any one that has had
this problem can you comment. Here is the link for the
specification sheet, in particular was the assembly of part
#HSA 293 of which I did not specially align upon assembly,

its called a pinion pin, and in the technical diagram it
apparently shows the pinion pins with a certain orientation
or alignment. Again any help is appreciated. greg :)

Greg,

I would be surprised if you could assemble the hub without
the pinion pins in their proper alignment. It is still most
likely that the cable is adjusted incorrectly. If the
indicator rod is not the correct length for the axle
(different length axles require different length indicator
rods and often random indicator rods end up in an old hub)
it is quite easy to adjust the cable incorrectly using the
method in the manual.

What I have found to be most convenient for cable adjustment
is to put the shift lever in 1st gear and tighten the cable
adjustment until the indicator rod will move no further. The
cable will then be taught but should not be any tighter than
that. Note that the cable should not be kinked. Ensure that
the cable moves freely without binding. Apply oil to the
shift lever, indicator chain, hub, and pulley. Make sure the
cable inner wire slides freely in the housing-either use
teflon lined housing or grease the cable where it slides in
the housing.

Back 25 years ago when many of my friends had Sturmey-Archer
3-speeds, I can't remember ever riding one with three
functional gears. I think I was really fortunate to jump
directly from single gear to 5-speed derailleur !
