I see slot of road pedals that are for SPD cleats and accordingly drilled shoes, but I've yet to see a road shoe that accepts an SPD cleat. They all seem to be the 3 hole type.

Seems kinda silly to wear shoes with big spikes and other such excess tread for road biking...

Am I missing something? I'm still new to this all.

What a n00b, I just answered my own question.

I got a free pair of mountain bike SPD style pedals, and being the cheapie that I am, all subsequent purchases have been in this format. I found a pair of Shimano "Touring" (part #SH-T 092) shoes. These are kinda low end, but they have two bolt attachment points, and they look like road shoes. The coolest part is that the cleat is somewhat recessed into the sole, so these are relatively easy to walk in without slipping all over the place. Also, some cheaper mountain shoes have a traditional sole, and SPD attachment.
